Why this matters

A US return from abroad is a different beast than the one TurboTax assumes.

Living outside the US doesn't pause the IRS — it stacks new requirements on top of the standard return. FBAR, FATCA, foreign tax credits, treaty positions, currency conversion at the right exchange rate, dual-status year handling — none of it is in the consumer-grade filing flow. We've built our practice around the version of the 1040 that actually lands on UK-resident returns each year, so nothing important gets left off.

  • Foreign income converted at the IRS-approved exchange rate, not the year-end snapshot
  • FEIE and Foreign Tax Credit modelled side-by-side before we file
  • Schedule B / FBAR / Form 8938 cross-checked so account totals reconcile
  • Amended-return strategy when prior preparers missed treaty positions or carry-forwards
  • 1040 + ~12

  • $13,850

Our process

How federal tax returns get handled end-to-end

  1. 01

    Intake

30-min scoping call. We confirm your residency status, income mix, and required schedules — and send a tailored document list.

  2. 02

    Reconciliation

Convert UK income to USD at the right rate, reconcile UK tax paid, and check for missed credits or elections from prior returns.

  3. 03

    Draft & review

Draft the 1040 (or 1040NR / dual-status return) with plain-English commentary on every position taken — you sign off before anything goes to the IRS.

  4. 04

    E-file & follow-up

Electronic filing, IRS confirmation, and any post-filing correspondence handled through our Enrolled Agent.

Three preparers in three years, none of them caught the foreign tax credit carry-forward I was sitting on. TaxStone amended two prior years and the refund covered their fee twice over.

What we'll need to prepare your return

Most clients send these by secure upload after the intake call.

  • Last 2 years of US returns (1040 + all schedules)
  • UK P60, P11D, and self-assessment if you file one
  • Statements from US and UK brokerage / pension accounts
  • Form W-2 / 1099 / K-1 if you have US-source income
  • Foreign tax paid receipts or HMRC statements
  • Any IRS notices received in the past 3 years

Not sure which of these applies to you?

Send us a one-paragraph description of your situation and we'll tell you which filings are actually on the hook.
